Reminiscence Sessions

Our weekly hour long reminiscing sessions on our Memory Table was a huge success. Our aim was to stimulate memory and conversations by using different objects from the past and present to create a theme for the table, taking all participants on a trip down memory lane.

OMT sessions were dementia friendly and intergenerational  which helped to encourage  socialisation during lockdown via an online platform (Zoom)

Our first memory session during lockdown 2020 got the project off to a flying start. The session was about Television back-in-the-day.

There was a surprise at the end when reggae superstar Paulette Tajah appeared in the chat room sharing her memories and items belonging to her family. This session was filled with excitement and laughter. Future sessions included a surprise visit by Soul singer/songwriter Omar Lyefoot MBE who reminisced about the filming of his  music video  with a number of the Elders who were  participating in the session. His 'Happy Birthday song to an Elder made her day.

Every week participants were encouraged to bring their favourite ornaments, photographs and stories to share during the sessions and talk about their memories behind each object. We invited family, friends and neighbours to help Elders and others to get involved. We incorporated our 'Music, Memories & Movement' workshop into each session by playing music 15 minutes before the session started and closed with music and dancing. Elders were encouraged to request songs via our OMT whatsapp group.

Watch the videos below to get an idea of our sessions and maybe have a laugh as you recall your memories behind each item.

These workshops were supported by CACFO

About Me

KORA's founder, Anika Wilson, has been inspiring, entertaining and educating children, young people and adults of all ages for over a decade. Through her storytelling performances, the listener discovers the richness of their imagination.

KORA Ltd was formed in 2009 and fulfilled Anika's lifelong ambition of sharing stories from her ancestral history with a new generation who know nothing of their cultural background but more importantly to increase awareness that collectively our stories are not that dissimilar.

Born in London, England to Jamaican parents who came from a long line of Griots, storytelling came naturally for Anika.  As a child she remembers listening to her parents, uncles and aunts sharing stories from back home. Anika is part of a large family and her house was always filled with singing, music, dancing and of course stories! Growing up Anika would spend countless hours listening to her father tell stories from back home. He would get up and act out scenes and imitate family members and ‘duppies’ who somehow always appeared in his stories!

On many occasion he would be joined by her Mother and her Uncles who would correct his stories by saying "No man, it no go so" and go on to tell their version of events. It was here that her love for story telling began.

Anika has a passion for African, Caribbean folktales, folksongs, poetry and history. Her experiences as an Actor in comedy and theatre, Writer and her commitment to keeping her roots alive and celebrating her culture enables her to create stories that captivates and engages audiences of all ages.
